Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America built 1,671,009 vehicles, an 8% increase, and 1,571,872 engines, a 10% increase last year.
The gains were attributed largely to the Tundra full-size pickup truck production ramp-up in Texas and additional Camry production in Indiana.
North American Toyota production began in 1984 and has grown steadily over the years, rising 39% over the last five years. This year Toyota will build its 20 millionth vehicle in North America including the five millionth Corolla.
This year’s developments will include the production start of the Venza crossover this autumn at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky and a new Canadian plant in Woodstock, Ontario, will open late in the year with capacity to build 150,000 RAV4 SUVs.
In 2010 Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi will open with capacity to produce 150,000 Highlanders.
