Toyota has said it will stop production at all of its assembly, transmission and engine factories in the United States and Canada for two extra days next month to work down accumulated inventory.


The planned stoppages are on Dec. 22 and 23.


General Motors Corp plans additional temporary plant shutdowns into 2009 due to slowing demand and will pare overtime to cut costs.


GM notified workers at five plants that produce a broad array of vehicles from mid and full size pickup trucks to SUVs and crossovers of the planned temporary downtime on Tuesday.
