June was another good month for the auto industry as US light vehicle sales continued to grow.
While the results didn’t rise to analysts’ forecasts, total volume rose 3.9% year on year to nearly 1.477m. The seasonally adjusted annualised rate (SAAR) came in at 17.16m, down from May’s robust 17.76M, but still a nice increase compared to June 2014’s 16.9m.

June was the third month so far in 2015 with SAAR above 17m.
Americans’ appetites for SUVs and crossovers continued unabated. Combined with strong growth in sales of mid size pickups, the ‘light truck’ market share increased 3.5 points to 55.8% of total deliveries.
The share for the Detroit automakers was even higher, as they claimed 69% of domestic brand sales.
Car sales fell 6.9% which cost the Detroit Three more than a point of market share. Ironically, Fiat Chrysler, the most truck happy of the group, was the only one to see growth in this segment.

By GlobalDataJeep remained the powerhouse brand in SUV/crossover sales and Fiat Chrysler was just 1,567 sales behind General Motors in the segment for the month. GM took a big hit from slower deliveries of its larger SUVs that wiped out gains in mid size and compacts.
A reliance on fleet sales cost Ford dearly in pride as Fiat Chrysler retailed more vehicles in June. GM also outperformed Ford as it continued its strategy of reducing sales to rental fleets.
The Japanese automakers enjoyed a good month with a combined 6.7% boost. They jointly picked up most of the share lost by Detroit as Mitsubishi and Nissan booked solid growth.
Subaru continued its string of sales records with big jumps in sales of the Legacy and XV Crosstrek.
Both Hyundai and Kia reported record June sales. Kia posted the best first half tally since it entered the US market.
Except for Volvo, where sales were essentially flat (which is actually an improvement for the Chinese owned automaker), all European car companies reported healthy volumes. Even Volkswagen was back in the black thanks to the new Golf and an uptick in Tiguan sales. Audi set its 54th consecutive monthly sales record.
Jaguar Land Rover growth beat European rivals thanks to the Land Rover LR4 and Range Rover. Jaguar sales were off despite a 42.9% increase in XF turnover. Discontinued models were to blame in Jag’s case.
BMW held on as the luxury leader, Mercedes-Benz finished the month as runner up and Lexus took the show position. Audi now has a firm grip on the fourth spot in the rankings, having passed Acura and Cadillac earlier the year.
Transaction prices rose about 2.5%, or about the equivalent of GBP526, compared to June 2014. According to estimates from Kelley Blue Book, the average was GBP21,367.
Ford’s average price increase was the highest among the major automakers, up nearly GBP994. The company said the new F-150 hit an all time record with the average transaction price exceeding GBP29,000.
Ford got those prices while trimming incentives. Ford’s average incentive dropped an estimated GBP1,790 compared to June 2014. General Motors put the most cash on the hood, spending an average of almost GBP2,400 per vehicle sold.
For the first six months of 2015, sales trends matched up well with recent years. In fact, June 2015’s drop compared to May 2015 was actually smaller than it was in 2014. The SAAR, however, took a noticeable downturn. While it’s most likely an anomaly due to the exceptionally high rate hit in May, it bears watching throughout this next quarter.
