Trade negotiators from the US and South Korea met in Seoul on 6 March to conduct preliminary talks on a free trade deal, reported Reuters. Formal negotiations open in May.
One of the disputed trade products is the export of cars to the US.
South Korean farmers and unionists are disputing the possibility that rice will be included in the free trade deal. South Korea currently has strict quotas on rice imports.
A free trade deal with the US is one of the top priorities of South Korea’s President, President Roh, whose current term ends in February 2008.
