General Motors’ former global purchasing boss, Bo Andersson, who quit GM abruptly last Friday, the first senior executive to leave since the company filed for bankruptcy protection, will become chairman of GAZ, the carmaker owned by Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska.
The appointment is expected to be confirmed at GAZ’s annual shareholders’ meeting on 29 June.
Andersson, 53, joined Saab in 1987 and later became vice president of purchasing for GM of Europe. He was appointed GM vice president of global purchasing at the end of 2001 and has been credited with developing GM’s global supply chain strategy, helping to improve the efficiency of suppliers while cutting back on the number of companies in GM’s supply chain.
GM said Andersson would be replaced from 1 July by Bob Socia who is currently executive vice president of Shanghai General Motors.
Socia will report to Henderson and will become a member of GM’s automotive strategy board.

Socia, 55, joined GM in 1975 at the Cadillac Division in Detroit and worked in both the finance and materials management areas. He was president and managing director of GM South Africa from 2004 to 2007.
Socia previously served in senior purchasing positions at GM do Brasil, vice president of purchasing of GM Europe, and chairman of GM-Fiat worldwide purchasing from the establishment of the joint venture in 2000 to the end of 2003. will be named soon.
Socia will be succeeded at Shanghai GM by GM Asia Pacific sales and marketing head Joseph Liu.
Liu has been in his current post since November 2008. Before joining GM Asia Pacific, he was with Shanghai GM for eight years, most recently as vice president of the marketing division.
