Nissan has begun installation of 30 solar-assisted charging stations at its Smyrna assembly plant and headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee.
The solar chargers, which will be operational for use by employees and visitors by 1 July, are designed to charge the Leaf EV which will be built at Smyrna. Nissan is also adding a plant to assemble the battery packs at its Smyrna manufacturing complex. The lithium-ion battery plant is 75% complete and should be operational late next year.
Nissan is working with the US Department of Energy, which is funding the stations through a matching grant, as well as Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Tennessee Valley Authority, with which the automaker will share usage and technical data from the solar chargers for further study.
