Nissan North America has built the first 2013 (fifth generation) Altima at its Canton, Mississippi assembly plant.

Canton started making the Altima in 2004 and has since built over 1.1m.

As well as assembling the Altima on three shifts, Canton, which NNA describes as “a global centre of excellence for body-on-frame truck production”, this autumn will start building the Frontier midsize pick-up truck and Xterra SUV; both are being transferred from Nissan’s older Smyrna, Tennessee, plant.

The latest Altima begins shipping to dealers this week and goes on sale, priced from US$21,500, at the end of June.

Canton, which employs approximately 3,300 on its 3.5m sq ft facility on 1,400 acres near Jackson, also makes the Armada full-size SUV, Titan full-size pickup and NV commercial vehicles.
