Both Nissan and Toyota have announced safety-related vehicle recalls in the US.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Nissan said it would recall almost 420,000 SUVs because of possible corrosion in a fuel pipe. Models affected are the 1997-2001 Nissan Pathfinder and near-identical Infiniti-brand QX4 SUVs.
Nissan said that there was not enough protective coating on a bracket for the fuel filler tube assembly. Salt used in cold states in winter could cause corrosion and allow fuel to leak.
Separately, Toyota said it would recall optional ‘all-weather’ floot mats in 55,000 Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry cars because the mat could interfere with the accelerator (gas) pedal if not properly secured.
This issue received coverage in US consumer media when it was first publicised some months ago. US vehicle safety authorities had previously acknowledged they were investigating the floor mats after receiving reports of unintended acceleration affecting these Toyota models.
