Nexteer Automotive plans to open a customer service centre in Troy, Michigan and will hire 50 engineers for the new 30,000 sq ft centre which will be open by April.

“Following two record-breaking years for new customer contracts, this latest customer service centre will support new electric power steering (EPS) work with Detroit-based automakers”, said Dennis Hoeg, vice president of engineering. “This location allows us to better support our local and global customers with critical electrical and software engineering talent which is crucial for the flawless execution of new product launches.”

Nexteer booked nearly US$10bn worth of new business over the past two years and, in 2011, EPS accounted for 60% of new customer contracts. Demand will continue to grow and, by the end of 2013, 90% of newly produced full-size trucks in North America will be equipped with a Nexteer EPS system. The firm claims to be the only supplier in production with a 12-volt EPS portfolio that spans sub-A segment vehicles to full-size pickup trucks and SUVs.

Nexteer is also hiring engineers for core development at its operations in Saginaw, Michigan.

The Troy centre will allow engineers to work on application engineering projects and to coordinate commodity strategies. The space includes a custom garage that will be used to provide technical support for ongoing customer programmes.

“Technical direction will still be developed at our world headquarters in Saginaw and the Troy facility will serve as an extension of this location, as do our other 14 customer service centres located around the globe”, added Hoeg.
