New upholstery fabric from Chrysler Group and supplier Milliken & Company is claimed to repel stains, control odour and reduce static electricity.

It comes on top of new materials in the latest Toyota Camry – and a Mazda model in Japan – that are claimed to be ‘kind to skin’.

The 2006 Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Caliber and Jeep Wrangler models will be the first Chrysler vehicles to offer so-called ‘Yes Essentials’ fabrics in their seats, with no additional treatment needed to repel stains and odours indefinitely.

The manufacturer says the key is dual-action technology that repels and releases spills that would stain other automotive fabrics. This technology also allows the upholstery surface to dry quickly. Liquid spills such as soda and accidents from transporting pets can be blotted dry. If tougher stains such as coffee, red juice, lipstick or even permanent marker penetrate the surface, a soapy wipe or soap-and-water mixture can be used for cleaning up.

“It doesn’t matter what gets on the fabric, how severe the stain is or how long it has been left unattended before being discovered – consumers will be able to remove the spillage without a special-order cleanser or a trip to the car wash. The new material used in Chrysler Group vehicles will give consumers confidence of having a stain-free interior,” a company statement claimed.

The upholstery is also said to control bacteria-based odours inside the vehicle. The silver-based antimicrobial technology inhibits the growth of mould, mildew and germs that can cause odours, including spilled milk, car sickness or water.

The new seating fabric is also said to reduce static electricity generated when entering or exiting the vehicle.

The fabric technology is claimed to withstand endless cleanings – even repeatedly in the same location – and will not rub off or change the texture or comfort of the seats or surfaces during vehicle lifetime.
