Chassis and powertrain supplier Metaldyne Corporation will close its Niles, Illinois, plant on 31 March.

Metaldyne put the aluminium die casting facility into a ‘discontinued operations’ category last July to be held for sale or closure.

“After several months we were not able to find a buyer for the Niles plant and given the lower industry volumes we now need to accelerate the closure of the operation,” said Metaldyne chairman and CEO Thomas Amato. “This action is in line with our product and cost streamlining efforts.”

Since January Metaldyne has taken significant steps to improve cash flow, reduce structural costs, balance capacity with lower vehicle production in North America and create a more agile organisation focused on core products.

The company has previously closed three chassis facilities.
