GM is starting to see results from its restructuring efforts, according to Reuters, quoting GM’s global product czar Bob Lutz.

Speaking at an industry dinner in Detroit on Wednesday night night, he said that there are clear signs of a turnaround taking place already, and that a new approach to car design and product planning will accelerate the process further.

New products such as the Chevrolet Camaro will be key. A prototype was shown in January and is now pending board approval.

The Pontiac Solstice convertible was cited as an example of how designers are now given a free rein.

According to Reuters, Lutz said that GM will be launching a range of best-in-class products over the next three years. The product planning process has become less bureaucratic and mechanical with more input from creative people and less influence from statisticians.

“There’s no doubt that a design-driven philosophy is the only one that will work,” said Lutz, according to the report.
