The Jeep Compass will be priced several thousand dollars below the Toyota RAV-4, one of its main competitors, according to Dow Jones.

The new small SUV will be priced at $US15,985, compared to $20,300 for the RAV-4.

A redesigned RAV-4 was introduced in December 2005 and has been selling well. Toyota has shifted almost 34,000 units this year.

Dow Jones said Chrylser expects sales in the small SUV segment to double to 600,000 units by 2010, citing the success of the RAV-4 and Honda CR-V.

The compass will be built at the Belvedere, Illinois plant, which also assembles the Dodge Caliber.
