Hyundai Motor America’s CEO John Krafcik confirmed the automaker is readying a turbocharged Veloster coupe for launch next year.

The 2013 model is scheduled to make its debut at the Detroit show in January.

According to Hyundai, a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine will power the Veloster. The engine is expected to be the recently announced turbocharged version of the inline-four in the current Veloster which will produce 204hp and 195 lb-ft of torque compared with the non-turbo engine that makes 138hp and 123 lb-ft.

Hyundai displayed custom versions of the Veloster at the SEMA show in Las Vegas to illustrate what customisers can do with the model.

The turbo is expected to reach US dealer showrooms by mid-2012.
