GM has relocated its worldwide electronics purchasing division from Warren, Michigan, to Shanghai, according to Automotive News.

Another six commodity purchasing groups are not affected by the move and will remain in the US.

By moving electronics purchasing to China, GM is placing itself closer to the origin of electronic components, most of which are now manufactured in China, Korea or Singapre, according to the newspaper.

GM vice president Jim Bovenzi has been sent to Shanghai to run GM’s overall purchasing operations in Asia. He is joined by Akhil Puri, a 31-year-old executive director who heads the electronics division, and five of his management team. He has reportedly hired around 100 staff.
