GM will end the overnight shift at its Moraine, Ohio assembly plant on July 17th. The elimination of the shift was originally announced in November 2005.
Around 4,150 workers are employed at the plant, which produces the Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X. Around 1,050 workers are affected by the closure.
The Associated Press at the weekend said that the Moraine plant would have to become more competitive to compete with other plants for new business beyond 2008. Production of the present model line-up is currently scheduled to end in 2008.
