US: GM eBay trial ending

A General Motors venture to sell cars online through eBay has proven short-lived and will end this week, a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires on Tuesday.

A General Motors venture to sell cars online through eBay has proven short-lived and will end this week, a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires on Tuesday.

The program, launched on 11 August as a pilot programme in California, had not driven major sales for the automaker, according to dealers and early sales figures.

The eBay venture was one of GM’s first moves after emerging from bankruptcy protection in July, the report noted. At the time, GM CEO Fritz Henderson said the project was part of an effort to make car shopping more convenient.

The eBay deal was initially set to end on 8 September but was extended to the end of the month.

Shoppers using special eBay sites can purchase GM cars and trucks at a “buy it now” price, or bargain online with a dealer.
