General Motors said Friday that more than a third of its 4,300 dealers in the US have signed up to its Shop-Click-Drive programme that allows customers to search and buy a vehicle online.
The online programme was introduced last November following a year long pilot with a small group of dealers. Shop-Click-Drive allows car buyers to search for vehicles, get pricing, choose and apply for financing and get an estimate for a trade in from a computer or smartphone.
Former GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson last year said that he wants GM customers, particularly younger buyers, to be able to buy cars online but stressed that GM wouldn’t bypass working with dealers.
By last October, about 100 dealers in eight states were using the tool and GM says it has now sold more than 1,800 vehicles using Shop-Click-Drive.
