The Detroit News reports that weaker than expected sales of the Pontiac G6 sedan, which was featured by Oprah Winfrey in a massive giveaway on her talk show last year, have prompted GM to cut production of the car beginning in April.

The newspaper said that GM told workers last week at the Orion Township, Mich., plant where the car is built that it will reduce G6 output by more than 10% and that an unspecified number of layoffs would follow in the weeks ahead.

The car has met with mixed reviews in the US where GM presented it as a competitor to medium segment models such as the Honda Accord.
