GM and the UAW union are working on an early retirement plan that would allow Delphi to shift workers back to GM by creating job openings at five GM assembly plants, reported the Detroit Free Press.

The unions are up against a February 17 deadline when Delphi is allowed to ask a bankruptcy court to cancel its union contracts, thereby paving the way for pay cuts, job cuts and plant closures.
UAW Vice President Richard Shoemaker is reported to have told local union leaders that a deal may not come before this date. He had previously threatened that if union contracts were cancelled, it would result in protracted strike action, with devastating effects on GM.
The newspaper reports that around 45,000 of 105,000 hourly workers are eligible fore retirement in the next few years, according to David Cole, of the Centre for Automotive Research in Ann Arbour, Michigan.
Of the 23,000 UAW workers at Delphi, 20,000 currently have the right to take jobs at GM if they become available.
