A new Hyundai transmission plant will be built in Georgia, according to local press reports.

Montgomery, Alabama, the home of a Hyundai assembly plant, had been hoping to win the plant, but it will instead be contsructed in West Point, Georgia, near to Kia’s new car plant, the Montgomery Advertiser said.

Hyundai already has an engine plant in Montgomery, which produces six-cylinder engines, and is due to start producing four-cylinder motors from later this year.

Kia’s new car plant in Georgia is due to start production next year. The new transmission plant will supply both Kia and Hyundai plants.

The Hyundai and Georgia plants are just 100 miles apart. “The relatively short distance between the two plants allows HMMA to focus efforts on engine production for both brands while Kia’s facility can concentrate on high-quality transmissions for each brand,” a company spokesman told the newspaper.
