Honda Motor’s US unit is “quite sure” it will be able to hit the fuel-efficiency target Congress is considering in an energy bill, its head has said.
The bill would require car makers to produce fleets of vehicles that average 35 miles per US gallon.
“It is a very difficult target,” Tetsuo Iwamura told Dow Jones. “But we are quite sure we will be able to achieve it in the future.”
Iwamura reportedly said Honda is developing a new generation of petrol-electric hybrid engines that will be ready “in the very near future” for small cars, and they will play a big role in reaching the 35mpg average.
