Ford is to increase the number of models sold in the United States equipped with its fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines from seven to 11 this year.
Ford aims to more than triple production capacity of cars and SUVs using the Ecoboost units, led by the high-volume Escape and Fusion nameplates. The company is also introducing five new electrified vehicles, as well as the introduction of start-stop technology paired with automatic transmission.
Ford safety VP Sue Cischke, said: “EcoBoost expansion and availability in high-volume nameplates such as the Escape and Fusion will take this affordable, fuel-saving technology to the heart of the market.”
The full size Taurus sedan will be the first to offer a choice between two EcoBoost engines, the two-litre four cylinder and the 365hp, twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 in the SHO sport sedan.
Ford said that, by the end of 2012, nine of its models in the US will deliver a certified 40 mpg.
The company’s electric vehicle range will expand this year with the introductions of the C-Max hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid, Fusion hybrid and Energi plug-in plus the Focus electric.
