The United Auto Workers (UAW) has told Ford Motor workers it does not expect the new health-care savings it has agreed to kick in until the middle of next year, reported The Associated Press (AP).
On Wednesday night (14 December), the UAW’s national Ford council endorsed the union’s tentative healthcare agreement and called on the US government to establish a national healthcare programme.
The tentative agreement is subject to ratification by active union members and approval by a federal district court but, beyond this, Ford workers reportedly will not reap any rewards until the middle of 2006.
According to AP, UAW revealed the likely timetable in a report sent to Ford workers in advance of next Thursday’s vote.
