Tata Motors‘ Land Rover has confirmed the first nameplate in its redesigned Discovery family – previewed in concept form at the New York motor show this week – will be the Discovery Sport “premium compact SUV”.

That suggests – as has been widely reported – it will replace the Freelander which is badged LR2 for the US (the current Disco is LR4) but Land Rover did not say as much in its press release.

Gerry McGovern, design director and chief creative officer, said: “I am proud to confirm the nameplate that will make Discovery a family of vehicles for the first time. It will be called Discovery Sport and will go on sale in 2015.

“This will be the most versatile and capable SUV in its segment and is the first expression of the Discovery Vision Concept unveiled here in New York.”
