GM’s Saturn division has announced that it is equipping versions of its latest sedan, the Aura, with StabiliTrak electronic stability control by Delphi Corp.
“ESC systems — including Delphi’s own electronic stability control technology — have been proven to help drivers maintain control and avoid collisions,” said Dan Warrell, Delphi Chassis Product Business Unit executive.
Delphi’s ESC is a vehicle stability enhancement system that helps reduce vehicle spins and excessive understeer. It assists the driver in maintaining control and avoiding a collision with features that extend consistency and capability of vehicle response over a wider range while minimizing “plow” and “looseness.”
Using a yaw rate sensor, lateral accelerometer, steering angle sensor, electrohydraulic control unit and wheel speed sensors Delphi’s integrated ESC system modulates brake pressures and adjusts engine torque to help enhance safety, improve vehicle performance and improve ride comfort and control.
“According to information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), ESC systems like Delphi’s reduced the risk of fatal crashes by 43 percent,” Warrell said. “The IIHS has said if all vehicles had stability control it could prevent as many as 10,000 of the more than 30,000 fatal crashes on the nation’s highways each year.”
