Chrysler has released several preview photos of its redesigned 2011 Durango seven-passenger SUV due out later this year. The new model will share its platform and engines with the recently redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee and will be built in the same Jefferson North plant in Detroit.

The new Durango will also share the Grand Cherokee’s petrol engines: the new ‘Pentastar’ 3.6-litre V6 engine and the carried over ‘Hemi’ 5.7-litre V8 engine with five-speed automatic transmission. The model is rear-wheel drive with available four-wheel-drive capability.

Last July, Chrysler added a second shift at Jefferson North to handle demand for the two SUVs; it will decide in the next six months whether to add a third shift.

The Durango nameplate dates back to 1998 and production of the second generation model stopped at the end of 2008 when Chrysler closed the Newark, Delaware, factory in which it was built.
