General Motors’ top brand Chevrolet sold 2.35m vehicles globally in the first six months of 2011, the best half-year performance in its 100-year history.

Chevrolet sold 286,499 more vehicles (+14% year on year) and set record H1 sales in many countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, South Africa, and Turkey.

US sales were up 16% following nine consecutive months of increases, Brazil was up 0.4%, Chinese sales rose 15%, Russian volume was up 54% and Canadian sales climbed 8%.

Brand chiefs attribute the global growth to a wave of new models, such as the Cruze (Australian production began this year), Spark, redesigned Aveo/Sonic [the latter now produced in the US] and the Orlando MPV. A new Malibu [now also to be sold outside North America] and redesigned Colorado pickup truck go on sale later this year.

Cruze sales worldwide rose 132% to 330,000 in the first half with most growth in China and the US.

The 100,000 Sparks sold during the first half of 2011 was a 110% gain over a year ago – driven by demand in South Korea, Mexico, and Uzbekistan.
