Behr America plans to nearly double the size of its North American headquarters in Troy, Michigan, add new business at its renovated Dayton Thermal Products plant in Ohio and build a new production facility in Mexico.
In Troy, Behr is adding an $US8.5m, three-storey, 69,000-square-foot office building, increasing the overall size of its four-year-old North American headquarters and technical center by more than 75%.
The new building will provide space for nearly 270 employees now working in rented facilities in the area and will allow for further engineering and programme-management job growth over the next several years. The new facility is expected to open early next year and employ around 600 people within a few years.
In Ohio, Behr Dayton Thermal Products is increasing its production capacity. The facility recently began manufacturing rear air-conditioning systems for several new GM products. Acquired in 2002 from DaimlerChrysler, Dayton is Behr’s largest production plant in North America.
In Mexico Behr soon will break ground for a new plant. Two sites currently are under consideration. The plant will produce engine cooling modules and components and will provide additional capacity for growth beyond 2007.

By GlobalData“It should be noted that our new Mexican plant will be built near customer assembly plants in Mexico,” says Mueller. “It will not impact operations at other Behr America plants in North America.”
The facility in Mexico will be built in two stages, with the first 130,000-square-foot building scheduled for completion by the end of 2006 with an initial investment of $13m.
