Ten automakers affected by airbag recalls in the USA, and Takata – the Japanese supplier at the centre – have hired the services of a US ballistics and rocket propulsion systems manufacturer to help solve inflator problems.
Orbital ATK, a Washington, DC based company, will try to determine why some Takata airbag inflators explode with too much force, blasting shrapnel out from the steering wheel.
The airbags are understood to have caused a number of deaths and injuries in the USA and elsewhere. So far 22m vehicles have been recalled worldwide as a result of these problems, 17m of these in the US.
