General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia Motors America have publicly supported the merger of the US satellite radio services Sirius and XM.


Chrysler also sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Kevin Martin and assistant attorney general Thomas Barnett expressing no opposition to the merger.


In 2006, these automakers sold more than 14m vehicles, or over 85% of the light vehicles sold in the United States.


In its letter filed with the FCC, General Motors cited the enhanced programme offerings and lower prices that the combined services would offer.


Ford listed a number of benefits to America’s drivers as well as pointing out the positive impact that the merger would have on the competitive landscape.

Hyundai and Honda largely echoed the Detroit automakers’ views while Hyundai also noted the pricing benefits and the “best of both” option that the merger would afford consumers.


The two radio firms also claim support from consumers, public interest groups, analysts, members of Congress and pther groups including National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Americans for Tax Reform, Independent Women’s Forum, Parents Television Council, American Trucking Associations, Charlie Daniels, RadioShack and Circuit City Stores.
