Another 1,600 salaried workers will leave General Motors in the US by 1 May.
The latest departures are not new but part of the automaker’s previously announced plan to slash its global salaried work force this year by about 10,000, or 14%. GM also aims to cut 37,000 hourly jobs worldwide by the end of the year, Reuters said.
GM North American President Troy Clarke told workers by email the cuts were needed to ensure GM’s long-term viability.
GM, Ford and Chrysler have shed more than 140,000 jobs since 2005 and almost half of their workforce since the start of the decade, the news agency noted.
