General Motors has announced another four recalls covering 428,211 vehicles in the United States plus some in Canada. This takes the automaker’s total number of recalls for 2014 to date to 48.

GM said dealers would replace the driver’s side air bag inflator in 29,019 2013-2014 model year Chevrolet Cruze sedans in the US and 4,066 in Canada becuase it may rupture and/or the air bag may not inflate. The automaker was aware of one injury related to the issue.

Dealers would recalibrate transfer case control module software in 392,459 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs in the US and 53,607 in Canada. An additional 20,874 were sold outside those markets. Affected are four wheel drive versions of the 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra; the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban; and the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

The problem is a transfer case which may electronically switch to neutral without input from the driver.

GM said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the issue.

Dealers will inspect, and replace if necessary, the windshield wiper module assembly in 4,794 2013-2014 model year Chevrolet Caprice police cars and 2014 Chevrolet SS sport sedans in the US. These cars were built by Holden in Australia which is consucting a similar recall of its Commodore models (on which the Caprice is based) in Australia and New Zealand. If the motor gear teeth become stripped, the wipers may not operate. GM said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Dealers also will replace the two rear shock absorbers in 1,939 2014 model year Chevrolet Corvettes in the US with the FE1 or FE3 suspension to repair a possible insufficient weld in the rear shocks that could lead to a fracture and/or reduce the service life. Thirty-three additional vehicles were sold in Canada and another 82 were exported. GM was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.

The automaker is setting up a fund to compensate families or victims connected to this year’s faulty ignition switch problem that led to 13 reported deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Details regarding the established of the fund are expected to be announce this week and the company will begin receiving claims on 1 August, US media reported at the weekend.

Victims reportedly will still be able to sue the automaker if they opt out of accepting payments although GM has announced it is protected from product-liability claims by its 2009 bankruptcy.
