Volkswagen of America has confirmed that the e-Golf will be sold in the US market, with the local launch in selected states set for the final quarter of 2014.
The 2015 e-Golf will be the first plug-in car and the first vehicle with LED headlights to be launched by VW’s US operations. Unlike other 2015 Golf models which are manufactured in Mexico, the EV will be sourced from Wolfsburg.
The e-Golf is powered by a 115hp electric motor. From a standing start the EEM-85 synchronous permanent-magnet AC motor develops a claimed 199 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to get to 60mph in approximately 10 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 87mph.
The 12,000-rpm motor and the single-speed EQ270 transmission form a compact unit; the EQ270 also incorporates an integrated differential and an electro-mechanical parking brake. The motor and transmission were developed in-house and are made at Volkswagen’s Kassel components plant in Germany.
Depending on driving style and charging behaviour, the average real world range for the e-Golf is said to be between 70 and 90 miles, while maximum range is approximately 115 miles.
Volkswagen of America is yet to announce pricing and sales expectations for the 2015 e-Golf.
