A national survey of independent dealers across the UK has shown the football World Cup events in Japan and Korea are affecting the motor trade with 63% reporting a downturn in trade since the competition began.
The survey, conducted by vehicle remarketing company GRS, also showed that 63% agreed that the effects of the first week of the competition were compounded by the two-day Jubilee bank holiday at the beginning of June to mark the Queen’s 50th year of reign.
However, 23% said that business was not badly affected by the World Cup with 14% unable to say.
Certainly, traffic volumes last Friday afternoon – as the crucial England v Argentina match, won 1-0 by England, was played – were noticeably down in just-auto’s Midlands location as football fans tuned in between 12.30pm and 2.30pm to watch the game broadcast live by BBC TV from Sapporo, Japan.
