Sales may be down about a fifth but Toyota and General Motors remained the world’s top two automakers in the first half.

Volkswagen, placed third, closed the gap with GM, gaining market share as its sales fell only 5%, according to Reuters calculations.

Counting in affiliate Kia, Hyundai Motor passed Ford to take fourth place.

GM is likely to come under more VW pressure because H1 data included brands such as Saab and Pontiac that it is either selling or axing.
