The BBC reports that a French examining magistrate has said he is placing AB Volvo under investigation for manslaughter over the fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel three years ago.

The report says that the fire broke out in a Volvo-made truck carrying flour and margarine as it was travelling through the tunnel. Thirty-nine people died in the subsequent blaze.

According to the BBC report, the magistrate said there was evidence that the air filter systems fitted to that type of truck were defective and that Volvo had known about the fault before the accident.

The report adds that the driver of the truck, as well as the companies that run the French and Italian ends of the tunnel are already under investigation.

Heavy goods vehicles were allowed through the tunnel again in May, but protests from campaigners alleging that the tunnel is not safe have continued.
