With the UK debut of the sporty new S60 saloon, the launch of a Bi-Fuel range, a new turbo-diesel engine, plus a reVolvolutionary number of new models making an almost entirely new line-up since the last UK motor show, the Volvo stand is a “must-see” at the Birmingham International Motor Show at the NEC, 19-29 October.
VOLVO BI-FUEL
With the recent demand for cheaper fuels, Volvo’s launch of a new Bi-Fuel range with engines developed to run on both petrol and a cheaper and cleaner alternative gas fuel – either LPG or CNG – is extremely timely. Examples of LPG and CNG models plus a cutaway model showing the integrated under-floor fuel tanks will be on the stand.
Bi-Fuel production starts in late 2000 with 1.8 petrol/LPG S40 and V40 models, while CNG and LPG versions of Volvo’s 140 bhp, five-cylinder, 2.4 petrol engine will become available for V70 and S80 early in 2001, with S60 Bi-Fuel models following later in the year.
NEW DIESEL POWER
Straight from its launch at the recent Paris Motor Show, Volvo’s new turbo-diesel engine makes its UK debut, and is the first Volvo designed and built diesel engine for a passenger car.

By GlobalDataDue to be introduced early in 2001 in the S80, V70 and then S60 ranges, the five-cylinder, 2.4 litre aluminium diesel engine has a common rail fuel injection system for quieter, smoother running and, compared to its predecessor, offers an increase in power from 140 bhp to 163 bhp at 4000rpm, and torque from 290 Nm to 340 Nm at just 1750rpm. Economy is also improved, while low emission levels mean it will comfortably beat the 2000 EU 3 emissions requirements.
S60 UK DEBUT
Pride of place on the Volvo stand goes to the stunning new S60 sports saloon making its UK public debut in Birmingham.
Its range of three powerful turbo engines (180 bhp 2.0T, 200bhp 2.4T and 250 bhp T5) combined with high standard specifications including quality sound systems with a minimum of eight speakers, and prices starting from under £20,000, make it an awesome package against its rivals.
S80 EXECUTIVE
The S80 Executive is another new Volvo making its UK debut.
If the S80 wasn’t already luxurious enough, the Executive model has a host of extra equipment such as unique leather upholstery, genuine walnut wood trim and improved rear seating area including an exclusive centre console, a power outlet, heated seats, extended legroom, and even an (optional) fridge! Other special options include a TV/video monitor with remote control, dark-tinted rear windows, DVD player or armoured protection.
REVOLVOLUTION
It’s been a busy and important year for Volvo with an unprecedented number of new models being launched. And, with Volvo reducing prices in September, the new range confirms Volvo as the value leader in the prestige segment.
Volvo started the year with the new V70 estate range, followed by the S40 and V40 Phase II, the rugged all wheel drive Cross Country, the stunning S60 sports saloon, and now a Bi-Fuel range. Phew! Naturally, the S80 executive saloon and stylish C70 coupe and convertible have also received detail improvements and will also be featured on the Volvo stand.
