General Motor’s two English assembly plants accounted for 60% of the country’s total light commercial vehicle production, the automaker said.
Most were made at Luton which built 57% of total industry output – Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro vans and rebadged versions for Renault and Nissan. The plant exported 64% of the vehicles made.
Ellesmere Port builds the Astravan.
Luton’s plant director, Mark Stein, said: “Responsibility for the majority of the UK’s industry volume in van manufacturing is a huge achievement and I heartily congratulate our excellent workforce for their commitment and dedication. Building on Vauxhall’s over 100-year history, we are now looking forward to an exciting future with the next generation Vivaro going into production in less than two years.”
