The majority of manufacturing jobs at TVR, the Russian-owned Blackpool sports car maker, appear to have been saved, according to The Transport and General Workers Union.
At a meeting late on Thursday, local union leaders were told by TVR managers that manufacturing of the luxury car would continue in Blackpool but at a different site though full details have yet to be given.
The union believes the decision could save the jobs of around 300 workers and could offer re-employment depending on skill levels to some of the 70 or so workers who have been laid off in recent months.
“We’re not out of the woods yet but this looks like positive news after a period of gloom,” said T&G regional industrial organiser Andy Robertson. “The company will meet with us again a week on Monday but for today I think we can take some credit along with Blackpool Council and Labour MP Joan Humble for some good news.”
The T&G has been told that TVR will move manufacturing to a new site in Blackpool but that the head office and some of the sub-assembly functions would be relocated. It was understood that this relocation would be in Lancashire but full details will become clear when TVR and the T&G meet in about two weeks, the union said.
