Stamping and assembly specialist, Stadco, is praising backing from UK local authorities, but says it has received no “direct financial support” for its decision to invest GBP15m (US$25m) into its UK facilities..
Stadco’s decision to plough the money in will have a significant impact on employment in the Midlands region of the UK, with around 200 new jobs created at its Telford and Shrewsbury sites, bringing the supplier’s staffing total to 1,100.

“The Council has offered us no direct financial support,” Stadco sales & marketing director, Dinos Andreou, told just-auto from Telford. “It would be safe to say [however] we have and continue to work closely with the Telford and Wrekin Council as they do all they can to support us.
“It is in the order of 200 [jobs] – it might be slightly north of that – but it is very close to the figure of 200. We are laying down leading edge press line technology in Telford – there will be jobs associated with the strengthening of the parts in Telford and some level of assembly.
“We are also introducing complex assemblies in Shrewsbury, body-in-white modules.”
The supplier is declining to reveal the source of the “major new contract,” but adds it will be for aluminium and steel stampings, as well as sub-assemblies for a “leading automotive OEM.”

By GlobalDataThe news follows a previous GBP15m investment announced in 2013 for new transfer presses, which will be operational during the fourth quarter of this year.
Investment in Stadco’s Telford plant will mean the addition of two, 2,000t transfer presses, equipped with material handling equipment, capable of processing both aluminium and steel blanks at high speed.
This will provide capability to produce up to four parts simultaneously, at a combined average rate of up to 3,200 parts per hour to suit high-volume vehicle production.
Despite being unable to reveal the contract source, Stadco is currently is involved with a major amount of complex assembly work for Jaguar’s all-aluminium F-Type model, for which it manufactures the major panels and closure assemblies.
Stadco is also an international supplier of body-in-white (BIW) products and services to a range of other automotive OEMs including Ford and General Motors.
“Because it [contract] is on future vehicle programmes, we are bound by confidentiality,” said Andreou. “What I am able to say is Stadco is built upon its extensive capability and experience of processing aluminium, which now goes back more than 25 years.”
“That, in conjunction with the workforce, has put us in a very strong position to [take] advantage of the growth in the UK automotive market.”
