Ford SUV unit Land Rover has awarded a Freelander model body panel spares contract to Stadco.
The current Freelander, launched in 1998, will be replaced by a redesigned model this year.
Stadco, part of the privately-owned Acertec Group, acquired the former Mayflower Vehicle Systems operations in Coventry and a pressings operation in Birmingham in mid 2004 but the Coventry site had faced an uncertain future following the collapse of the MG Rover Group last year, as it undertook a lot of work for the car maker. Stdaco will press aftermarket Freelander parts at six sites in the UK and paint and assemble the components at Coventry.
In a statement, Stadco said the new contract “is particularly good news for the Holbrooks Lane plant” (in Coventry) which has built a reputation as a specialist centre for niche and low volume manufacture as well as offering the automotive aftermarket a unique ‘one-stop shop’ for pressing, painting and packing of spare parts.
Stadco Coventry already makes items like aluminium pressings for Ford unit Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage and DB9 luxury sportscars and body panel and coating work for Land Rover’s utilitarian Defender. Stadco now plans an unspecified paint shop investment at Coventry plant to maintain ‘world-class’ standards.

By GlobalDataStadco managing director Andrew Morriss, said: “Our Coventry site was facing an uncertain future after losing a lot of work following the collapse of the MG Rover Group last year. The Freelander work has now made it possible for us to safeguard the remaining jobs at the plant for the foreseeable future.”
