Siemens Datatrak has announced a new facility to help fleet managers
and their companies control costs associated with the London Congestion
Charging Scheme planned for February 2003.

A special ‘polygon’ watchbox, which exactly matches the geography of the
Transport for London scheme, will provide reports to show which vehicles have entered the Congestion Area.  This will enable freight, logistics and service management companies to prove the number of trips within the Congestion Area, minimise paperwork and invoice accordingly.

Michael Bateson, UK managing director, Siemens Datatrak, said:  “For fleet managers, the new Congestion Charging Scheme for London represents a significant challenge for companies operating fleets.  At the outset, there is the basic need to manage operating costs, to ensure that entry into the Congestion Area is for a valid reason such as customer location or requirement for rapid delivery.

“Furthermore, the administration of the scheme requires streamlining.
Transport for London will allow pre-registration for fleet operators, and tracking can then provide a painless audit of use via monthly entry zone reports.  This bypasses the requirement to issue drivers with company credit cards or reimburse expenses.  Finally, London is the first of several major Congestion Charging Schemes in the UK and fleets need to prepare now in order to be ready for the challenge.”

Siemens Datatrak’s custom polygon ‘watchbox’ for the London Congestion Charging Scheme has been designed for its Internet-based Easitrak automatic vehicle location service.
