PSA Peugeot Citroën says there is no justification for union action timed to coincide with the London motor show.
Protesting against the manufacturer’s planned closure of its Ryton plant near Coventry next summer, unions have taken out newspaper advertising and have handed out leaflets to motor show visitors on both press day last Tuesday and the first public day yesterday, Thursday (20 July).
The Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus trade unions advertised in nationally distributed free papers and Midlands regional media this week in an attempt to persuade private individuals and companies to boycott Peugeot and Citroën cars.
The unions want to reverse PSA’s decision to close the UK plant in 2007 and boost production in Slovakia, and have presented a Ryton survival plan to Peugeot.
A joint statement from T&G national secretary Dave Osborne and Amicus national officer Roger Maddison said: “Ryton workers and supporters from the unions have been out leafleting the motor show already but it’s the first public day when we really want to drive the message home that a boycott will hurt the company so they should think again about closing a profitable and productive plant.”

By GlobalDataPSA Peugeot Citroën spokesman Jonathan Goodman said: “PSA Peugeot Citroen disagrees with the principle of the unions’ call for a boycott and believes there is no justification for these measures, particularly given the decisive vote against industrial action by union members at Ryton on 5 June.
“The campaign only seeks to put at risk the jobs of the 5,000 PSA Peugeot Citroen staff who will continue to be employed in the UK after the closure of the Ryton plant. We do not believe the union boycott will work and continue to focus our efforts on helping our employees at Ryton back into employment.”
