This year’s winner of the United Kingdom’s Pilkington Automotive Best Design Interpretation Award is Mohammed Athur Ali (25) of Huddersfield for his revolutionary Mountain Bike Car design.
The Best Design Interpretation Award is presented to the student whose ideas best explore the limits of the vehicle design, considering both the requirements of industry as well as facing tough styling competition.
Mohammed’s design, Mountain Bike Car, is an innovative combination of both a sports car and off-road vehicle.
He said: “With this design, I wanted to create the thrill of a sports car with an all-terrain vehicle. I was inspired by rally cars and wanted to recreate the excitement associated with them for the every day market.”
Charles Mason, head of new model introduction at automotive glass supplier Pilkington, presented the prize of £1500 to Mohammed. He said : “The winning design really captures everything this award is about – innovation and creativity as well as feasibility of actually producing the design. Mohammed’s design really stood out as it immediately conveys all the qualities of his original design brief as well as demonstrating innovation and creativity. It is a very unique design and is also a realistic prospect for a future vehicle.”

Judging panel head Alan Woodward, who is global shaping technology manager at Pilkington’s UK technology centre, added: “Mohammed’s design is truly outstanding. He recognised a real gap in the market and his final design serves this niche. It is this vision as to what the automotive industry actually needs that marked Mohammed out as the clear winner.”
Ali’s experience in the automotive industry includes work placements at Ford, London Taxis and Mercedes Benz in Germany plus time at interior systems specialist Johnson Controls.
Commendations in the Best Design Interpretation category went to Grayham Hodgson from Kent for his Cycle Wave design and Matthew Swann from Coventry for his innovative introvert/extrovert Renault.
