Pedestrians can take good and bad news from the latest Euro NCAP crash testing results, announced the RAC Foundation today (23 November).
 
In the pedestrian protection category, the Citroen C6 was the first car to be awarded a maximum four stars while the Jeep Grand Cherokee was awarded no stars at all.

The Citroen C6 activates a ‘pop-up’ system to give greater clearance between the bonnet and the rigid parts of the engine.


This is the first such system to be assessed by Euro NCAP but others are expected to be introduced soon.


Executive director of the RAC Foundation Edmund King said: “In terms of pedestrian safety these results graphically illustrate the vast difference between the best and the worst. We need more innovation in pedestrian safety and Citroen has shown how to achieve it.”


In other categories, the Citroen C6 was awarded five stars for adult occupant protection and four stars for child protection, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee achieving four stars for protection and three stars for child protection.

Among today’s results is a ‘struck-through’ three-star rating for the Chevrolet Matiz for adult occupant protection.


Such a strike through indicates an unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury in one aspect of the car’s performance.


Two other superminis, the Fiat Punto and the Toyota Yaris, were awarded five stars for adult occupant protection.


Euro NCAP Chairman Claes Tingvall said: “I am pleased to see that we have two more superminis providing five-star occupant protection. It is clear that manufacturers are finding new ways to provide safety even in small, tightly packed cars.


“However, we also have a struck-through three-star car in this phase, showing that there is still room for improvement.”
