A new entry level Shogun Classic model has been added to the range of the third generation Shogun which went on sale in the UK in May. Classic is the new lifestyle name for the GLX specification Direct Injection Diesel (DI-D) Shogun model which has been introduced at £22,995.00, £2,000 less than anticipated and in-keeping with Mitsubishi’s lower pricing policy announced in December 1999.

Classic models will make their exhibition debut at the British International Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham on Tuesday 17 October.

Three or five door

This new entry level Shogun retains all the durability, 4WD ability, technology and panache of the GLS version but its ‘down to earth’ specification makes it a real work horse for rural communities where it has traditionally been a strong seller. Standard equipment includes ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), sunroof, central door locking, alloy wheels, electric windows and door mirrors, power assisted steering, front and rear towing hooks, driver and passenger SRS airbag and electronic immobiliser. The three door Classic has seating for five adults and the five door model seats seven.

The Shogun Classic looks very similar to the GLS and without the flared wheel arches it becomes more of a workhorse than an executive car. As with the GLS it has a monocoque construction and has more interior space than the previous model. The Shogun Classic has a towing capacity of 3,300kg making it a very versatile 4×4 vehicle to own.

The Classic version is available with Mitsubishi’s new 3.2 turbo diesel DI-D (Direct Injection Diesel) engine with Mitsubishi’s SS4-II (Super Select) 4WD system. The Shogun is the first Mitsubishi vehicle for the UK market to come with the DI-D engine which is more environmentally friendly, allowing for less emissions and better fuel economy. The DI-D engine produces 162bhp at 3,800rpm and 275 lb ft of torque at only 2,000rpm with a combined fuel consumption figure of 29.1 mpg.

The SS4-II is Mitsubishi’s selectable 4WD system which allows the driver to select 2WD or 4WD depending on the road and weather conditions. The Shogun is one of just a few vehicles which has such a sophisticated system with no price penalty.

The Shogun Classic has a top speed of 106mph and a 0-62mph acceleration of 11.5 seconds. The automatic version (five door only) has a five speed automatic transmission with Sports mode.

This new derivative is available through all of Mitsubishi’s 122 UK dealerships.

The higher specification GLS derivative has all the above as standard as well as colour keyed door handles, roof spoiler, wheel arch, side sill and lower door mouldings, front reflector type fog lamps, a centre console with a multi-information display, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, electric aerial and the option of two tone exterior paint.
