UK sales of the BMW Group’s Mini have already matched those of 2001, less than four months into 2002, the company said today. Over 11,600 Minis have been sold in 2002 to take the total to 23,200 since the car’s UK launch last September.

Almost every UK buyer has taken up the ‘tlc’ service package that offers five years of factory-prescribed routine servicing for £100 ($US140) while dealer accessory departments have retailed over £75,000 worth of items including the now-infamous Mini cuckoo-clock – on the hour, a tiny model emerges from its garage accompanied by engine sounds produced by a tiny silicon chip.
UK buyers are also ordering an average of £1,300 worth of factory fit options for each One and £2,000 for Coopers.
This is reflected on the company’s Mini Cherished website – launched in March – which lists near-new ‘used’ cars – most have at least air conditioning, alloy wheels or a sunroof added to the base specification and Coopers without the optional chrome body inserts are rare on UK roads.

By GlobalDataMimicking parent company BMW’s trend to gradually introduce options, the Mini division is only now offering factory-fit satellite navigation option for about £1450 depending on model.
The system, which uses the electronics and software from BMW models, is installed in the central speedo binnacle with the speedo moving to the steering column next to the rev counter.
Two new colours have been added to the range (a red metallic and white) along with a dealer-fit roof rack that allows the attachment of a luggage box, ski, snowboard and bike racks.
