UK new car registrations fell 4.6% to 187,632 units year on year in July though volume is up 1.3% for the year-to-date to 1,564,199 units.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has trimmed its full year forecast from 2.6 million in April to 2.58 million units.
UK-built cars are forecast to take a 19% share of the market. Over the year-to-date their market share stands at 18.7% of all new car registrations.
Diesels took 32.5% of the market in July, matching the record monthly level set last April this year.
Diesel market penetration is expected to rise to 33% in 2004, up from 27.3% in 2003. Volumes are forecast to rise by over 20% to 850,000 units. A further rise to 890,000 units, or a 36% market share, is expected in 2005.
