UK auto engine output creaked up up 0.2% year on year in January, to 206,686 units.
Production for UK built cars grew 11.2% to 78,960 while exports slipped 5.6% to 127,726.
The SMMT said the outlook was bright following major investments in recent years.
“UK engine manufacturing has had a solid start to the year, posting positive growth in January, driven by demand in the home market,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.
“Manufacturers have invested over GBP1bn in UK engine production in recent years which is expected to yield an increase in output.”
